Like the winding vines that cover its terraces, the history of Ridge Vineyards is full of intricate twists and turns. Beginning in 1885, when Osea Perrone bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge, the dedication of several eras of winemakers has grown together to bestow the Ridge Vineyards name with international repute. Currently comprising two estates—Monte Bello and Lytton Springs—the company’s guiding principle is an emphasis on “pre-industrial wine”: Instead of employing processes that adulterate the natural state of the grapes (resulting in one-dimensional, standard issue bottlings), Ridge relies on fruit already ripe with perfection in order to capture flavor with minimally intrusive techniques. The focus, historically as now, is on red wines, with zinfandels taking center stage. But other stylings are worthy of spotlighting as well, including the vineyards’ signature Geyserville (a unique blend of zinfandel, carignane, petite sirah, and alicante bouschet harvests produced every year since 1966). Tours and tastings are available for both Monte Bello and Lytton Springs, located respectively in Cupertino and Healdsburg, California…Ridge Vineyards is proud to share its wine experience and make it part of yours.
