If the value of “art” is to be emotionally transported, then winemaker Marshall Stuart is a true artist. The tropical notes in Lorimar’s 2017 Sauvignon Blanc should come as no surprise as California sauvignon blancs traditionally boast notes of mango and melon just like this one. Nor will its crisp, light, fresh and dry qualities shock you, although they are delivered incredibly well. What will twist your noodle is that, although it profiles as a traditional California wine, it is also lean and in a similar way to its colder climate counterparts, featuring notes of lemongrass alongside guava. What a perfect marriage. It has lots of that warm weather richness, but with plenty of restraint and incredible balance. This means it stands up to goat cheese, tomato and yoghurt, and it also measures up well to oily fish, soups and salads. In short, this is a really safe bet to share with friends. Anyone who enjoys sauvignon blanc, new world or old, will likely appreciate this wine. It is the all-round pleaser. Personally, I’m glad to know this is out there.
