If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming an astronaut or perhaps you already are or are in the process of becoming one and you’ve questioned how to successfully transfer a little tipple from a glass to your mouth due to the whole no gravity thing, you need not worry anymore. The spirits company Ballantine, who have already taken whisky into space, has been hard at work testing many prototypes. They have finally settled on a glass design that’ll work optimally in space conditions.

The glass emulates the traditional whisky glass shape but has futuristic alterations. The curved vase is made of rose gold—gold is generally a nonreactive element thus won’t affect the whisky’s taste. With taste now checked off the list, the designers needed to figure out how to get the whisky into the glass. By inserting a nozzle that fits into a one-way valve in the bottom of the glass, the whisky sits in the glass until these four steps transfer the whisky into the mouth: one motion pulls the whisky into the base of the glass, roll the whisky in your hand so the heat warms the metal and in turn moves to the liquid, move the glass down before moving your nose to where the vapors are resting, and finally move the glass upwards to capture the whisky in the base plate and let it enter your mouth. That’s quite a lot of effort for a drink, but when in space…
