San Francisco’s Anchor Distilling Company was the first craft distillery in the United States. It was created when Fritz Maytag looked around and realized there wasn’t a single 100% American rye whiskey on the market. Old Potrero was released in 1994, the first whiskey of its kind since Prohibition. Anchor Distillery quickly followed it with Junípero Gin, the first craft gin in the country.
Now Anchor Distilling Company is opening its doors to the public for exclusive tours and tastings. The expert-led tastings are held Thursday through Saturday and offer an inside look into the historical distillery. The rooftop garden, tastefully planted with example botanicals used in their spirits, offers a panoramic view of the city.
No tour would be complete, of course, without a tasting. Visitors have the opportunity to taste six of the many excellent spirits made by Anchor, including the historical Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey and Junípero Gin.
Tickets are only 35 dollars per person, but the 26 person limit per session makes this an exclusive event, so be sure to book in advance. You can also purchase private group tours, or rent out the stunning rooftop garden for intimate private events.
