The problem with some malbecs today, even the pricier ones, is that they are one dimensional wines, and that’s not fun to drink, is it? Lorimar’s 2015 Malbec is a welcome respite from some of the dull and mundane lazy bottlings out there, offering a hard-to-resist invitation upon pouring, with its lighter-than-expected color, and luminosity. In short, this is a very pretty pour. On the nose are sweet plum, currant and sweet tobacco which follow through to the taste profile. There’s a bonus layer to this wine’s taste profile that comes at the end, in the form of ash. Very structured and pleasant, with some personality and chances taken, which panned out. This is why we love winemaker, Marshall Stuart. He pretty much makes what he loves, and we love what he makes. Get this if only to reflect upon its profile later as to what a California Malbec can really do. The soft tannins in this wine make barbecued meats and even chicken and fish perfect partners.
