In 1966 Mark Edwin Andrews purchased Knappogue Castle and, along with his wife, embarked on a journey to restore the castle to its original splendor and begin the passionate pursuit of a new hobby, buying casks of fine whiskey to be aged and bottled beneath the castle. Knappogue, pronounced “Nah’pogue”, translates to “hill of the kiss” in Gaelic. The whiskey produced there today was named after this actual castle that stands on a romantic hillside in County Clare Ireland.
Flash forward over 50 years later and Knappogue Castle is ready to launch a very special limited-edition release of a 21-year expression of their Single Malt Irish Whiskey. With only 1400 bottles set for production, this exciting and highly anticipated release is truly something special.
Knappogue Castle produces a variety of single malts including the 12, 14, and 16-year-old vintages as well as the world renowned Knappogue Castle 1951, one of the oldest and rarest Irish Whiskies commercially available. The 21 Year Single Malt is unique for its marriage of 2 single malts, distilled from copper stills then matured in bourbon casks. The first one aged for 23 years, casked in 1994 and the other aged for 21 years, casked in 1996, before finding each other and joining in a more perfect union.
On the palate, this whiskey is soft and mellow but with depth and complexity due to the long maturation period in the oak casks. There is a malty sweetness that is consistent throughout, and a lingering finish of delicate barley. The combination of these two unique vintages is a match made in heaven!
