Live-Blogging Band of Gypsies Tap Takeover

Drink Me Magazine is here live at Bobby G’s Pizzeria (2072 University Ave.) to live-blog the craft cavalcade that is unfolding at this very special SF Beer Week Event. Tonight’s tap takeover features beers from 6 of the 9 so-called ‘gypsy’ brewers here in the Bay Area. A ‘gypsy’ refers to a contract brewer without their own personal space, utilizing the facilities of another brick-and-mortar brewery to produce their beer. To commemorate their kindred spirit, these brewers have collaborated on a special one-off Belgian Quad, appropriately titled Band of Gypsies.

The Fizzary: An Urban Menagerie

Behind every good cocktail is a solid mixer. By and large this necessary component is non-alcoholic, yet is every bit as crucial in guiding the end result toward proper palatability. And whereas quality booze is relatively simple to procure in a city like San Francisco, mixers can be far more elusive. Thankfully, The Fizzary (2949 Mission Street) has got you covered.

Organic Tequila

Tequila is commonly regarded as a nectar of the gods. The distilled essence of the magical agave plant is known to have some curious effects on humanity, for better or worse. But with its popularity at an all-time high, the market has been flooded with a slew of tequilas that are of questionable quality at best. One way to insure that you’re drinking the same spirit enjoyed for countless generations in the Jalisco region of Mexico is to get your hands on a certified organic tequila. The world’s first 100% certified organic tequila was produced by 4Copas. They’ve been in the game for over a hundred years, long before the terms ‘organic‘ and ‘sustainable agriculture‘ entered the lexicon. But they happen to do things this way as a matter of reverence for our Earth, and respect to taste, unrelated to the recent popularity of greener lifestyles. Because they emphasize quality [...]

When in the Nighttime IS the Right Time?

There are moonlight wine tastings in British supermarkets and a calendar advising when conditions are right for drinking certain varietals. Some folk swear by these practices … and others swear at them. So, should you start asking a bottle of wine, “What’s your sign?” The question really is this: how much truth, if any, is there to the belief that astrological signs affect what adult beverages you drink and, more specifically, how the ingredients are grown and made? Planting according to the phases of the moon is a practice as old as agriculture itself, but employing the same celestial portends as guidelines for tasting the fruit of the vine is much more recent. It’s generally based on biodynamics, a holistic agronomy system created by philosopher Rudolph Steiner in the late 1920’s.  Adherents believe that not only the vines are impacted by phases of the moon but, even more surprising, that [...]

Moons Over Vodka

by Sangita Devaskar A few weeks ago, Drink Me Magazine was invited to an exclusive dinner to celebrate the launch of Diageo’s new organic spirit, Moon Mountain Vodka. The (newly awarded!) Michelin star restaurant Spruce had mixologist Brandon Clements on-hand to create an amazing pairing with chef Mark Sullivan’s exquisite menu. We were joined by Mountain Moon Vodka’s master distiller, Gerry Webb who shared with us the unique components of this artisan vodka. you can partially attribute to the subtle sweet hints of this spirit to its production on an 80 year old former gin producing copper still.  We discussed the copper colored top and the meaning of the label – and we very much enjoy the non-gaudy bottle. The Pairing was delicious and commenced with Uruguayan farm-raised Osetra Caviar served on a potato blini and topped with crème friache. The osetra caviar, famed as some of the best farm raised in [...]
