Design: Classic Glassware

There is a new trend in cocktails. I’m not sure if it’s due to the rebirth of the classic cocktail itself, or that everyone is hitting up flea markets more, but an abundance of vintage cocktail glasses is everywhere. From Comstock Saloon and Wo Hing General Store in San Francisco to Pegu Club and Prime Meats in New York, bar masters are setting the mood with a collection of vintage mix-to-match sets. It allows the bar to choose the right glass for the cocktail but, perhaps most importantly, vintage glasses set the tone for an ever changing yet decidedly classic list of cocktails on the menu. I’m loving the curved sides of the Nick & Nora glasses being used for martinis. They seem a bit smaller but oh, how they keep the drink in the glass. Your Plans For Sunday: Speed Rack SF

What could be better on a Sunday afternoon, after NFL playoffs are over, than watching sixteen of SF’s best females duke it out to see who has the fastest hands in town? Absolutely nothing. Together with Ananas Consulting, LUPEC SF, and Rye On The Road, Speed Rack is rolling into the Brick and Mortar Music Hall on Sunday, January 8th at 3pm.  A national tour, Speed Rack is traveling through ten US cities to find the fastest female bartender in the land and to raise $75,000 for breast cancer research and awareness. Here’s how it works: sixteen top female bartenders (we’re talking ladies from Rye, Hotsy Totsy Room, and Bourbon and Branch) compete head to head in timed trials. If you watch the video on Speed Rack’s website, you’ll see there’s a whole lot of show-womanship and bragging going on. A panel of judges will then score each competitor on [...]

Pick Your Poison: Whiskey Bars

Pick Your Poison is a new column that guides you through the nooks and crannies of San Francisco’s bar scene, much like the white rabbit led Alice down a dark and mysterious hole. Whether you’re a lost wanderer searching for comfort, a wild hare looking for a party, a caterpillar hanging out where the poets and artists sling, or a queen looking for a king, each month contributor Sheridan Costa will point you in the right direction. In her first column, Sheridan exposes the best places to down a fine whiskey. Enjoy!

Ginger's Morning After

Last night I had the great pleasure of attending the Martin Miller’s Gin Thursday Drink Night, hosted by The Mixoloseum at the very handsome Bourbon & Branch in San Francisco. I was thoroughly deflowered on both counts – I’d never attended a Thursday Drink Night before, neither in person nor online, and it was my first time at Bourbon & Branch. Both gave me a very hearty and tasty welcome.
