Alcohol-Infused Ice Cream

One of the hottest trends in drinking today comes from one of the coolest desserts out there.  Several high profile eateries and bars from around the country are now serving up alcohol-infused ice cream, and it’s every bit as delicious as you can imagine.  In combining two of the best vices known to humanity, what’s not to love? In San Francisco, the Mission’s most popular dessert destination is Humphry Slocombe (2790 Harrison Street). Known for their eclectic array of inventive flavors, it was one of their original sinful concoctions that helped put them on the map: Secret Breakfast–bourbon ice cream mixed with cornflakes.  And while you’d have to eat a whole bunch of this boozy confection in order to notice a significant buzz, all it takes is one taste in order to enjoy the oaky and smoky characteristics that define barrel-aged bourbon. By Nate from Whiskywall Much stigma abounds concerning the hour of the day when one chooses to enjoy a little booze. There is the after-5 school of thought that apparently frowns upon drinking until the evening is nigh upon us. If drinking is something you only do during dinner then perhaps that makes sense. If drinking is something you only do during dinner you probably are not reading this. Roll the clock back a bit more and you have the drink-at-lunch crowd. Perhaps because of the association with professionals and their martini lunches, drinking at lunch can carry the air of a slightly decadent, grudgingly respected part of “doing business”. As for the much maligned morning hour; drinking is traditionally reserved for the staid mimosa or gin fizz, to be imbibed in moderation and as part of a regimented Sunday brunch.

Opening the freezer and seeing a Technicolor array of bright, sugary ice pops is one of life’s great pleasures. Unwrapping a Popsicle and then eating it — while your tongue slowly turns unnatural hues of blue, green or red — is one of the most refreshing and most quintessentially summer things there is. This past summer, we’ve been making our own ice pops, but with one great twist that’s decidedly un-childlike: booze!
