Angostura Does it Again…the world’s most expensive rum

The famed company that has supplied the little paper-wrapped bottles of bitters to bartenders from around the world is on the map with their incredibly crafted rums…Though Angostura’s rums have been around since the 1940′s, they are getting easier to find state-side. The Trinidadian brand is a staple name for mixologists and a stamp of quality for their entire line of products. We recently met up with Angostura’s distiller, John Georges on his visit to San Francisco to chat with him about Angostura’s newest creation–Angostura Legacy–an incredibly special blend of seven of Angostura’s top rums, making an absolutely stunning product that captures an impeccable craft and a colorful history–and has earned itself the title as the most expensive rum in the world, with a price tag of $25,000. Even if you find yourself itching to grab a bottle, you’ll have to move quickly–they are incredibly limited. Only 20 were produced worldwide, and each comes [...]

Oscars Drink Recipes

The Oscars are on tonight and that means a few things: you’ll get to see a whole bunch of inappropriately long acceptance speeches, and you’re probably hosting some company for an obligatory Oscars Party. But whereas anybody can invite a few friends over to watch some TV, your party is really gonna stand out thanks to the preparation of some topical Oscar Cocktails.

Stout Tour 2012: Breckenridge Brewery

Easing eastward through the Rockies, it would be silly to pass up the quaint mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado. In addition to some of the most spectacular skiing in the continental US, Breck is also home to one of the region’s original craft breweries.

Interview: Dave McLean of Magnolia Pub and Brewery

Last week San Francisco’s scenic Golden Gate Park played host to the 5th annual Outside Lands Music Festival. In addition to being one of the ultimate gatherings for all things rock n’ roll, OSL also prides itself on being the preeminent food and drink event on the West Coast.

A Summer Smash

The dark, burnt wood flavors that permeate your typical Bourbon don’t exactly pair well with the warm months of Summer. As a spirit that tends to burn from the inside out, Kentucky’s finest can quickly be forgotten in June and July when drinkers turn their attention to more refreshing libations to cool and sooth the sweatiness away. But over 100 years ago—long before the days of air conditioning—an intrepid bartender named Jerry Thomas pioneered a vibrant elixir which he aptly named the Whiskey Smash. Using sweet and fresh ingredients that typify this time of year, the drink has sustained a fervent following throughout the 20th century, becoming one of the preferred methods for disguising the pungent flavors of America’s favorite dark liquor. With its unexpectedly yellow hue, a Smash done right doesn’t even look like Bourbon, let alone taste like it. Best of all it’s a cinch to make this [...]

Charbay Racer 5

Recipe Of The Week: Spring Mountain Sour

Let’s play word association: Napa Valley. You thought of wine, right? I thought so. Between Charbay Winery & Distillery and The Perfect Puree, you might want to also associate Napa Valley with the makings for some seriously inventive (and delicious) cocktails. We had the chance to sit down with them to taste through what happens when Charbay’s newest releases meet with The Perfect Puree’s new seasonal concoctions. Our favorite concoction of the bunch was the Spring Mountain Sour. We start with Charbay’s new Racer 5 aged whiskey, a whiskey that’s wine country to its core, from the beer that it’s distilled from, to the Napa Valley chardonnay barrels it’s aged in. It’s bright, bold. . .  and it doesn’t hurt that it’s been made from one of our favorite IPAs. Perfect Puree’s new Chipotle Sour is a fantastic contrast to the sweetness of the whiskey, with smoke and spice coming [...]
