In July, Anchor Brewing introduced the latest in their limited edition Zymaster Series. Dedicated to the revival of classical beer styles, Zymaster was launched earlier this February with the release of California Lager–a crisp, golden-orange pale with a touch of citrus zest. The follow-up, No. 2 Mark’s Mild, celebrates brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s 41st anniversary with the groundbreaking pioneer of the modern craft movement.
It’s nearly impossible to overstate how much progress Mark has witnessed firsthand during his lengthy tenure at Anchor. San Francisco’s legendary brewery has been at the crux of the craft community, helping to revitalize the industry from a time when mass market beer was the only game in town. An homage to the brews of a bygone era, Mark’s Mild reintroduces the British Mild Style, a super flavorful session lager with an ABV in the low 4s. Special 1.5 liter Magnums are now available for purchase from the brewery and probably won’t last very long. If you can’t make it to the Bay Area anytime soon, you can also find it on tap at numerous high-end beer bars around the country–if you’re lucky. Tasting notes include immediate hints of toffee, chocolate and nuts, with a lingering earthy hop finish.
I have yet to wrap my hands around a pint but am very much looking forward to an upcoming visit to Potrero Hill. This scenic section of San Francisco is home to Anchor (1705 Mariposa Street) and their world-famous brew tours, notorious for the unlimited tastings that follow. Reservations are necessary and can be secured by phone-only. Call 415-863-8350 for more information.
