Williamsburg, Brooklyn is home to some of New York’s most celebrated beer bars. Of these, perhaps none offer the sheer variety of rapidly rotating taps as Barcade (388 Union Avenue). With dozens of elusive microbrews to choose from on any given night and an array of classic arcades to tickle your sense of nostalgia, this neighborhood hangout has long been a popular destination for beer geeks and gamers alike. But this Thursday, September 13th, there’s no other bar in the five boroughs that can compete.
Beginning at 4PM, Barcade will proudly host a Cigar City tap takeover. The highly-acclaimed brewery out of Tampa, Florida, has been getting crazy, silly press these days thanks in large part to their hopelessly hoppy IPAs and a dazzling assortment of innovative flavors and zany ingredients. For example, consider their Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout, brewed with ancho peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and cocoa nibs. This curiously flavored 11-percenter will be on draft all night, along with 11 more of Cigar City’s most popular offerings.
Although their distribution has been steadily expanding over the past couple of years, Cigar City is still a relative rarity in the Northeast. If you crave the craft, this is an event that is worth a lengthy subway ride to attend. And not all of their beers are nearly as intimidating as the Hunahpu. For those that prefer something a bit more easy going, there’s the Florida Cracker–a Belgian style Wit brewed with coriander, lemon and lime for a light, crisp finish.
The common thread running through much of Cigar City’s beer is creativity. Take a traditional style and tweak it in a small way to alchemize something altogether different than you were expecting. So come thirsty this Thursday to the heart of Williamsburg and be prepared to give your palate a few surprises. The one thing you can certainly count on is that it’s gonna be a helluva good night for great beer.
