Beerunch!

What better way to start off Superbowl Sunday than with a Beerunch?  Put aside your mimosas and Bloody Mary’s, there’s nothing quite like pairing beers with some of your favorite breakfast dishes. We headed out to MateVeza’s beer paired brunch at Kelly’s Mission Rock, and indulged in a multi-course breakfast with some of the bay area’s best beers complementing our morning foods.

It was a perfect day, and we were out on the water…welcomed with fresh beermosas and a full menu.  A large crew showed up to what was a deliciously paired breakfast and brews.  I started off with a huevos rancheros served up with a MateVeza IPA which has a wonderfully slightly smokey profile which paired really well with the eggs and spice.  If you’ve never had MateVeza, you’ve got to try it – it’s made from Yerba Mate (a South American tea) which balances really well with the hops and makes the beer naturally caffeinated.

In no particular order (it was set up like a buffet), my next dish was the pan roasted root vegetables paired with He’Brew Rejewvenator.  The vegetables were super tasty and brought out some of the nice bitter undertones of the beer.

An incredible smoked salmon with creme fraiche was paired with Pangea – Dogfish Head’s beer made with ingredients from every continent (including ice from Antarctica, apparently).  The beer’s bubbly, light ginger flavor broke up the natural oils of the fish.

Then there was the Prather Ranch Meat Co Ham paired with Belgian Doom from the 21st Amendment Brewery, which resulted in a savory, salty flavor. In the next pairing, a chicken-stock braised Iacopi Farm brussel stouts with a Smokestack Imperial Stout from Magnolia Pub & Brewery, the brussel burst of salted goodness complemented the dark surge of the stout.

To top it all off there were biscotti cookies (a choice of chocolate or almond) paired with Moonlight Brewing Company’s Toast.

It’s not too late to catch more Beer Week Events!  Check out a few recommendations!

And next time you wake up and are heading to brunch, put aside that orange juice and reach for a bottle.
